MINDORO

The picturesque seventh-largest island in the Philippines is not only beautiful as far as the eye can see, but is a perfect holiday site.

Located off the coast of Luzon and northeast Palawan, Mindoro is the seventh largest island in the Philippines and a true beauty for all those who visit. Derived from the Spanish Mina de Oro, meaning “gold mine or Lots of Gold”, Mindoro has been known to be home to traders from China, who referred to the place as Ma-I or Mait, and the Mindoro traders would exchange beeswax, cotton, true pearls, tortoise shell, medicine betelnuts, and yu-ta cloth for Chinese porcelain, trade gold, iron pots, lead, copper, coloured glass beads, and iron needles.

Full of rich history that accompanies its lush sights, Mindoro was a single province with Calapan City from 1920 to 1950 as the provincial capital. By 1950, a referendum was passed that resulted in Mindoro being divided into its two-present day provinces: Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro.

Mindoro’s economy is largely reliant on agriculture and products include a variety of fruits such as citrus, bananas, lanzones, rambutan, and coconuts, as well as cereals such as rice and maize. The nutrient-rich land also has sugar cane, peanuts, fish, livestock, and poultry. But one of the main things that allows Mindoro to stand out is locations such as Apo Reef National Park, Lubang Island, Puerto Galera, Sabang Beach, and Mount Halcon that make it an attractive place for the tourists. The Puerto Galera’s beaches are the island’s most popular tourist site and rightly so as the tourits enjoy the calming breeze on rich sandy beaches with fresh water and greenery in a tranquil environment.

Tagalog is widely spoken in Mindoro, however, there are some parts which have been greatly influenced by the native Visayan and Mangyan languages, as well as languages such as Mainstream Filipino and Taglish (a combination of Tagalog and English). To really experience Mindoro, tourists have the option to travel by either plane or boat, and on the islands themselves the tourists can travel by buses or minivans, which provide a scenic and relaxing views of what the island has to offer.  Apo Reef offers tourists the chance to explore the reef through scuba diving.

The ideal destination for a quiet and relaxing getaway, Mindoro is one of the many stunning islands that comprise the Philippines. With its luxuriant views and calming ambiance, it is great for those who want to vacation away and forget about the bustling routine of life!
